Palliative Care (4 Important Answers)

Palliative Care isn’t only for terminal illness.

What Is Palliative Care?

The WHO describes it as a treatment which “improves the quality of life of patients and that of their families.” Palliative care is centred on relieving suffering, pain management, psychological and spiritual guidance not only for the primary patient but for the people who care for and about them.

When Is This Type of Care Given?

This type of care is typically administered to people diagnosed with serious, long-lasting disease or life-threatening illness. Oncology patients, Alzheimer’s sufferers, and people with multiple sclerosis are examples of people who may be prescribed this type of care as part of their treatment plan. It’s important to note however that this type of care can still be administered when pursuing a cure.

Who Administers This Type of Care?

This type of care at Faircape Health is administered by a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) of healthcare providers. Coordinating care providers are able to more comprehensively improve quality of life because this type of care isn’t only about the physical body. A physician may prescribe pain management medicines and further treatment from healthcare professionals like psychologists, social worker, nurse, physiotherapists and more.

What Are the Benefits of Palliative Care?

One of the most important strengths of this type of care is it puts the human side of illness at the centre. “Taking control”, “having a choice”, “finding peace”, “learning acceptance”, and “physical comfort” are all commonly mentioned by palliative care patients as benefits they experience. Every individual case is different and each patient’s unique needs can be accounted for in this type of care.
