Amputation Rehabilitation

Amputation rehabilitation is aimed at helping amputees ambulate and operate independently with the use of a prosthetic limb. This type of rehabilitation helps people return to their occupations and to reintegrate back into social life. The nine phases of amputation rehabilitation process are: pre-operative, amputation surgery, acute post-surgical, pre-prosthetic, prosthetic prescription, prosthetic training, community integration, vocational rehabilitation, and follow up.

Types of Care offering Amputation Rehabilitation

Just as each person is unique, so too will their individualised treatment be. Amputation rehabilitation incorporates psychotherapy, pain management, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy where necessary. Those receiving amputation rehabilitation can expect treatment to follow these modalities:

Sub-Acute Care & Rehabilitation

Sub-acute care is care provided in a hospital environment – typically after an acute hospital or Intensive Care Unit stay. Sub-acute care and rehabilitation facilities differ from intensive care environments in that they are led by allied discipline clinicians supported by medical generalists focusing on rehabilitation.

Our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Approach

Clinical evidence shows that treatment outcomes are best when treatment is administered by an MDT incorporating a variety of practitioners. At Faircape Health, we bring together healthcare professionals from different fields to collaborate on treatment plans for optimal clinical outcomes. Primary and allied healthcare practitioners combine their specialities to administer the most comprehensive treatment plans available.

Our amputation rehabilitation treatment regimens do not focus exclusively on disease, but rather on optimising wellness and function. Following an initial complex assessment, the treating physiotherapist will develop a custom-tailored treatment plan to improve quality of life, exercise tolerance and overall physical functioning for optimal outcomes.
